Rathbeg

Rathbeg, a small ringfort hidden in Gortnahurra, County Mayo, still carries the quiet shape of an early medieval home. Its name means little fort, and that humility fits a place where hundreds of similar banks dot the bogland and pasture. The earth may have held a kitchen, a byre and a family before farming and rain softened its edges. To walk past it is to brush against a lost world that never stopped existing, only stopped announcing itself.
