Doonfore Fort

Doonfore Fort is a circular early medieval rath in Levallyroe, County Mayo, where two unaligned boulders in the eastern bank still invite speculation about a hidden underground passage. The earthwork measures thirty-three metres across, sits beside Levally Lough, and retains a western annex now buried beneath gorse and brambles. A quarry has cut through its southern ditch, yet the fort remains visually distinct on the low knoll, marking a landscape where human ingenuity and natural decay continue to negotiate its shape.
