Caldragh Burial Ground

Caldragh is a children's burial ground inside a cashel at Boleyboy, County Mayo, where unbaptised infants were laid to rest outside church authority. Dense rows of small upright stones and low sod-covered hummocks fill a square space about nineteen metres across, bounded on one edge by a remnant wall. Local memory holds the ground in use until the mid-twentieth century, while a wind-twisted hawthorn called the umbrella tree still stands at its western edge, marking a place where grief was kept quiet and separate from official rites.
