Man-made underground passage in Marshes Upper

Discovered in 1995 during construction work. Only a portion of the Man-made underground passage was available for examination. Consists of two N-S aligned passages of drystone construction, one above the other and connected by a trap door. The upper passage (H c. 0.75m, Wth at floor level 0.95m, Wth at roof level 0.6m) was blocked due to collapsed material. The surviving portion is 1.9m long. Entrance to the lower passage (H 1.45m, Wth at floor level 1m, Wth at roof level c. 0.5m) is restricted by a low lintel. It survives for a total length of 9.4m and towards its terminus there is a broadening and slight curve which forms a chamber with a max. Wth of 1.75m.
