What is recorded here

The tholsel or market house was on Dublingate St, now called Ludlow St, at the junction with Market Square. It was described by Isaac Butler (1893) writing c. 1744 as a ‘low mean building’ that was demolished c. 1800. It had a vaulted cellar and was the centre of the butchery trade in eighteenth century Navan. The Court House was built on the site c. 1795-1805 but high up on its S wall is a stone commemorating the older building (Ellison 1963, 46-7). The inscription in false relief and gothic lettering reads: Edmund Manninge / was overseer / of this work in the / year of Our Lord /1632 on whose / soul the Lord / have mercy.
