Underground butter rooms hidden beside castle walls in County Kerry. A local landowner found steps leading down into a small cool chamber, likely used for storing butter before refrigerators existed. The passage is now filled in, but it reveals how ordinary people built practical hidden spaces beside grand castle walls.

In 1986 the Castleisland District Archaeological Survey recorded that according to local landowner there was situated immediately to the N of Currans Castle (KE048-003001-) a site that about 25-30 [c. 1956-61] years the landowner, discovered steps leading down into a small area, which he thought was used for for storing butter.
