Man-made underground passage in An Dumhaigh (tc Leitir Mhic An Bhaird)

Man-made underground passage

What is recorded here

What appears to have been a natural sea cave which was adapted to form a Man-made underground passage-like structure. It was not possible to enter it but a description made in 1957 suggests a passage of c. 20m, most which was natural, leading to a chamber 16ft × 14ft and 8ft high. The chamber and a portion of the passage were said to have been roofed with flagstones. It is situated on a S facing slope overlooking Dooey sandhills in fair pasture. The above description was derived from the 'Archaeological Survey of County Donegal. A description of the field antiquities of the County from the Mesolithic Period to the 17th century.' Compiled by: Brian Lacey with Eamon Cody, Claire Cotter, Judy Cuppage, Noel Dunne, Vincent Hurley, Celie O'Rahilly, Paul Walsh and Seán Ó Nualláin (Lifford: Donegal County Council, 1983). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated. Date of upload: 22 September 2008
