Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Lough

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort in Lough, County Kilkenny: a semi-circular earthen ringfort on the west side of a slight ridge, with a low bank, outer terrace and fosse, opening east where the land drops and the view runs far. Four field boundaries still point at it, as if the fort were the heart of the countryside rather than a mistake in it. People may have lived there, marked territory or simply watched the changing light across the grassland; the earth keeps the shape while the names and dates withdraw.
On the W side of the S end of slight N-S ridge, with land dropping steeply to E, in rolling grassland. There are good views in all directions. A semi-circular area (int. dims. 26m N-S; 20m E-W) enclosed by low earthen bank (Wth 1.5-2m; int. H 0.1-0.6m; ext. H c. 2.4m) from N-W-S, external terrace forming fosse (Wth 2.5-4m; D 1-1.5m) and outer bank (Wth 1.5-2m; ext. H 1-1.5m). The E bank of the monument is levelled, possibly quarried as indicated on the 1st (1839) ed. OS 6-inch map. Four field boundaries run up to the monument, from all cardinal points.
