What is recorded here
Indicated is a fairy fort in County Cork, Ireland. It is a circular earthen ring about thirty metres across, with a bank rising one and a half metres on the outside and a shallow scarp on the inside. The south half now holds mature evergreen trees, while the bank has been folded into a field boundary and straightened slightly on the southwest. A disused limekiln once stood at the northeast edge, though no surface trace remains visible. The fort is not grand or sharp; it is a quiet, lived-in curve in level pasture, the kind of place where human hands and fairy story both have room to be believed.
In level pasture. Depicted as semicircular curve (SE->NW) in field boundary on 1938 OS 6-inch map. Circular area (33m E-W; 32m N-S) defined by earthen bank (int. H 1m; ext. H 1.5m) E->W; scarp (H 0.4m) W->E. Bank incorporated into field boundary system; slightly altered on SW side to form straight line. South half of interior planted with mature evergreen trees. No visible surface trace of limekiln depicted at NE side of site on 1842 OS 6-inch map. Recorded by Bowman (1934, 300) as single-ramparted fort (diam. c. 35yd; bank H c. 5ft) with about 'one-sixth of the circuit...levelled'; disused limekiln on NE side.
