What is recorded here

Indicated is a substantial stone ringfort clinging to the cliff edge above the Cummeragh river in County Kerry. Its rough outer wall still stands three metres high while the inner facing has collapsed into the level earth, leaving a wide southern gap that invites entry rather than blocking it. The fort sits close enough to the water that tide and rain have probably erased every shadow of the people who built it, preserving only the stubborn geometry of their labour.

Internal diam. 26.8m N-S, 25m E-W This roughly circular caher is located close to a cliff-edge on the E side of the Cummeragh river, which flows into Lough Currane a short distance to S. The site is enclosed by a substantial wall which consists of a core of stone and earth faced internally and externally with drystone masonry. The internal facing is largely collapsed. Externally the wall is well-built of rough horizontal coursing and features a slight batter at base. It averages 3m high externally, is 3m in average width and stands to a maximum internal height of 1.1m. A 2.6m wide entrance gap is located at S. The interior of the site is level with no apparent features. The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J.
