Indicated

Fairy fort / stone ringfort

What is recorded here

Indicated is a circular cashel near the top of a south-facing Clare slope, marked on the 1897 OS plan and still holding a narrow east entrance. Its broad double-faced wall wears grass, moss and later drystone work, while three small stone cells cling to its north-east face like rooms added after the main house was built. A second cashel and a cairn watch it from nearby, making the field feel less empty and more like a neighbourhood where people kept returning.
Near the top of a S-facing slope, with slope increasing immediately to S, in pasture within a large multiperiod field system (CL009-059001-). Indicated on the 1897 OS 25-inch plan and the 1920 ed. of the OS 6-inch map. Listed as ‘Enclosure’ in the RMP (1996). This circular cashel (24.5m ENE-WSW; 24m NNW-SSE) is defined by the grass- and moss-covered remains of a double-faced wall (Wth 3m at NNW-N; int. H 0.4-1.3m; ext. H 0.4-0.6m) on which is built a later drystone wall (Wth 0.6-0.7m; H 1-1.5m). The cashel’s outer wall-face is highest at SSW-NE, its large stones (max. L 1m; H 0.2m) are laid horizontally and a vertical break is visible at NW. Rubble from the wall covers the lower part of its inner and outer faces (total Wth 6-7m) around most of the perimeter. An entrance (Wth 0.6m) at ENE may be original. Westropp (1909, 23) may have found a ‘lintelled gateway’ here. Three contiguous stone cells (individual dims. L 2.6-3.2m; Wth 1.6-2.4m) of probable later date are built into the external wall-face at N-ENE, and are themselves defined by low walls (Wth c. 0.5-1m; H c. 0.5m). A cashel (CL009-203001-) lies c. 95m to the SW and a cairn (CL009-059029-) lies c. 136m to the N. Compiled by: Mary Tunney and Conn Herriott Date of upload: 7 February 2022
