Marianne and I sat on the bank above Lisdeen as the fort emerged from mist, its shallow trench and low ridge drawing the eye like a breath held underwater. We did not measure it or name its dates. We watched the light move across the curve and remembered that forts are made by repetition, by hands returning place by place. When we stood to leave, the trench had vanished again, not destroyed but hidden, waiting for someone steady enough to see the shape it keeps making.

A fairy fort, or earthen ringfort in Lisdeen, is a circular earthwork enclosure typical of early-medieval Ireland, likely dating to between the 5th and 10th centuries. Such sites are often associated with local folklore, including beliefs in fairy habitation and other supernatural elements.
