Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Liscreagh

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Mortals may have occupied this earthen ring in Liscreagh, yet fairies still claim it. The circular bank stands 1.8 metres high around a 28.5 metre interior, with a four-metre entrance facing south-southeast. Mature trees line the ridge while faint cultivation marks cross the grass. What humans forgot, the spirits remember.
In pasture, on S-facing slope. Circular area (28.5m N-S; 27.5m E-W) enclosed by earthen bank (H 1.8m); external fosse survives as slight depression. Bank planted with mature deciduous trees; entrance (Wth 4m) to SSE. Interior raised on S side to compensate for hillslope; crossed by remains of cultivation ridges on N-S axis; lightly covered by coniferous trees. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
