Mairi and Cillian skipped stones across the flax pond at Promontory fort while Cillian recited the dimensions of the trapezoidal area. The ancient bank with its central gap watched them from the neck of the promontory, neither approving nor stopping their childish game.

Trapezoidal area (17.5m N-S; 27.5m E-W) projecting N from Cape Clear. Neck of promontory cut off by two banks, 2.6m apart. Outer bank (H 1.5m) may be modern; second bank (H 0.75m; Wth 4.1m) with central gap, probably ancient. Rectangular depression in interior (4.8m N-S; 3.5m E-W; D 1m) regarded by Westropp (1915, 255) as hut site but known locally as flax-retting pond.
