This grey commemorative plaque records: Lewes Naval Prison 1793 Site of Lewes House of Correction built in 1793. Sold to the Admiralty in 1853 it housed Russian prisoners during the Crimean War. Demolished in 1963.
The site was originally a House of Correction established in 1793, later repurposed as Lewes Naval Prison by the Admiralty in 1853 to house Russian prisoners of the Crimean War, reflecting its historical importance during periods of penal reform and international conflict.
