This blue commemorative plaque records: Joseph Aloysius Hansom, 1803-1882, inventor and architect, designed the central block of this building which was erected in 1836 as the Proprietary School, opened in 1837, and which re-opened as the Town Museum in 1849. Recorded plaque organisation: Leicester City Council.
Joseph Aloysius Hansom is best known for inventing the Hansom cab, a popular form of Victorian taxi, though he was also an architect who designed the central block of this building originally built as a school and later a museum.
