Indicated

Fairy fort / ringfort

What is recorded here

Indicated is a circular hollow in Mayo pasture, narrowed from thirty to twenty metres across when a field boundary cut through its heart. The western half vanished beneath later ownership lines, leaving only the eastern curve visible on maps until the boundary disappeared entirely. What remains is a shallow dish sloping north, half-remembered by the land and half-erased by human ambition to divide it.
In pasture, with some naturally outcropping rock, near the N-facing brow of a ridge with slightly higher ground to the S. Recorded on the OS 25-inch map (1893) as a raised oval shaped area (est. diams. c. 30m NNE-SSW; c. 25m ESE-WNW) – probably a ringfort – bisected by a later field boundary running NNE-SSW through the interior. The later, Cassini edition of the OS 6-inch map (1920) only records the E-half of the monument, to the E of the later field boundary. This boundary has been removed since and the monument survives as a circular hollow area (diam. c. 20m: D 0.2m), the interior of which slopes slightly down towards the N. Date of visit: 21-8-2025 Compiled by: Gearóid Conroy and Leo Morahan

This remains an important historical record, but the official description says the monument is no longer visible or has been destroyed. The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
