Knowth is an Irish chambered tomb where a tall standing stone faces the entrance of Tomb 1C West. At equinox sunset its shadow crosses the carved kerbstone like a clock hand, turning death into a measure of daylight. The stone may have fallen soon after being set, yet it was lifted again and returned to its socket.

Outside the entrance to Tomb 1C West amongst the ceremonial stone settings (ME019-030086-) is a standing stone (dims 0.37m x 0.35m; total H 2.56m) placed opposite the entrance stone (K 74) of the tomb. It has highly polished surfaces, some with faint motifs surviving on its E face. It may have fallen shortly after its erection as there was no spread of quartz stones beneath it. The stone has been re-erected in its socket and, although the passage of Tomb 1C West is not aligned on the setting sun at the equinox, the shadow of the standing stone at sunset on those occasions does cross the art of the entrance kerbstone like the pointer of a gnomon. This standing stone at Knowth likely dates to the Neolithic period (c. 3500–2500 BCE) and may have had a ceremonial or symbolic function, possibly aligned with the passage tomb's orientation or ritual practices. Its placement opposite the tomb entrance suggests a connection to funerary or astronomical traditions.
