COUNTERSCARP RATH in Knockcairn

COUNTERSCARP RATH

What is recorded here

Knockcairn holds a counterscarp rath, an earthen defences built to keep unwanted life outside its circle. The chamber may have held a family, a herdsman or a frightened child during a storm. Its buried line still draws a boundary between the living world and the dark patience of the earth.
The official Northern Ireland record identifies this as COUNTERSCARP RATH. Recorded period: E.CHRIST.. The official map point was placed at the centre of the recorded archaeological site from the source map reference.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
