Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Knockburrane

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Knockburrane held a circular earthen fort beside KE016-047----, visible enough for surveyors to mark it in 1841 and again in 1914. The earth has since given back its shape, leaving no ridge, ditch or stone for a modern hand to touch. What remained was a name, a drawn circle and the certainty that people once lived inside boundaries the land has erased.
Situated SE of KE016-047----, this circular enclosure is marked on the 1841-42 and 1914-15 OS maps. No surface trace survives today. The above description is derived from C. Toal, ‘North Kerry Archaeological Survey’. Dingle. Brandon in association with FAS Training and Employment Authority (1995), no. 631. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 2 August 2013
