Kilpeacan Grave Yard

Graveyard

What is recorded here

Kilpeacan is a Kerry graveyard holding roughly three hundred unnamed stones, mostly clustered south of its leacht. Children lay near the edge, adults toward the centre, while one marked grave at the southwest house site still names P. Egan. The distinction gives the field a rare shape: a small life measured in stone, set inside a wider field of forgotten names.
Approximately 300 uninscribed grave-markers occur within the enclosure. These are mainly located in its S sector, where there is a noticable clustering in the vicinity of the leacht, and they presumably date to the period of use of the site as a ceallúnach (KE088-015008-). The Delaps recorded that children were buried near the S boundary of the enclosure, while adults tended to be interred in the central area (KE088-015006-) of the site (1910, 188). One grave-marker, located in the interior of the house site at SW, bears a Latin cross and is inscribed 'In Memory of P. Egan’. See attached plan of monument taken from O'Sullivan and Sheehan 1996, Fig. 144 The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan (compilers), 'The Iveragh peninsula: an archaeological survey of South Kerry'. Cork University Press (1996), no. 922. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 29 July 2013
