Kiln

In hilly peatland in an area scattered with large natural boulders. Only the remains of the curving S end of the bowl (0.65 x 1.2m) of this corn-drying kiln survive. They were noted at the base of a field wall. The boulders used in the construction of the wall (H 1.3m; L 1.2m) were markedly larger than those used for the kiln. This kiln was purposely concealed in the landscape as it was associated with the illicit production of poteen. It probably dates from the late 19th to the early 20th century (McCarthy 1916, 13-16).
