The Yellow Gate stood at the lower end of Maudlin Street, marking the entrance to Thomastown. In the early 1930s people called it a heel stone, perhaps for a game played in the street or a mark remembered by children. That much is clear. The rest is lost, which is why the gate still sounds like a place half-remembered rather than a fact fully known.
