Vinegar Hill in County Kilkenny became the deadliest engagement of the Irish Rebellion of 1798 when United Irishmen and French regulars clashed with British forces and yeomanry in May. Thousands died or fled into the hills, turning a local field into a wound that helped destroy the Irish Parliament and reshape the island. The ground still carries the weight of that sudden violence, where ordinary people became soldiers and the earth drank what no one wanted to lose.
