Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Kilcanway

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Kilcanway is called a fairy fort, but it is a human rath: a circular earthen enclosure about thirty metres across, drawn on the 1842 Ordnance Survey map with a quarry beside it to the north. It is no longer visible because quarrying took the earth that made its rim. The fairies may have entered later, attracted to a broken human place, but the first shape was likely a dwelling, a boundary, a small defensible world. To lose it is not mystery; it is ordinary extraction. People dug, sold, built elsewhere, and forgot the name of what they removed.
Depicted as a circular enclosure (diam. c. 30m) on the 1842 OS 6-inch map, with a quarry immediately to the N. This possible rath is not visible at ground level and has been removed due to quarrying. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 5' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). Date of upload: 22 December 2009

This remains an important historical record, but the official description says the monument is no longer visible or has been destroyed. The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
