King Charles' Castle stands on western Castle Down, Tresco, a mid-16th century artillery fortress built under Henry VIII with low angular bastions designed to carry cannon and return fire. During the English Civil War the same rock was refortified with earthen defences, proving the island remained a live military edge rather than a forgotten margin.
