Forty-seven years separate the two dates on the stone, yet both belong to the same man. James Swanton died in 1800, but the younger date and unknown initials suggest he marked the place earlier, perhaps when first claiming the land or losing someone else. The grass grows around the stone like water around a pillar, undisturbed by the contradiction.

In pasture, on N-facing slope, immediately N of Fort View House. Upright standing stone (H 1.7m; Wth 0.2m), with inscription 'JAMES SWANTON DEC 1800', whose grave it is said locally to mark; below this '1747' and some initials.
