Man-made underground passage in Inishmurray is a man-made underground passage in Inishmurray, County Sligo, Ireland. It is a lintelled creepway built within the raised western terrace of The Cashel, extending from Teach Molaise towards the south-west angle of Templenatinny. Large flat stone slabs form the roof, but they remain at risk of collapse.
Located in a raised terraced area in the W half of an ecclesiastical enclosure (SL011-011001-), known as ‘The Cashel’.
A lintelled creepway or Man-made underground passage-like feature extends from the area before Teach Molaise (SL001-001005-) towards the south-west angle of Templenatinny (SL001-001011-). This is not a Man-made underground passage proper (i.e. tunnelled below ground level), but is built within the raised terrace that forms the western subdivision of the Cashel. The feature was not surveyed in detail as inspection of the interior indicated that the roof lintels – large flat stone slabs – are in danger of collapse.
The above description is derived from a survey of the archaeological remains undertaken in 1998-99 and published in J. O’Sullivan and T. Ó Carragáin 2008 Inishmurrary. Monks and pilgrims in an Atlantic landscape. Volume 1: Archaeological Survey and Excavations 1997-2000. Cork. The Collins Press.
