What is recorded here
Indicated is a fairy fort on a south-facing slope above the Baurearagh River, where an earthen bank and hidden fosse still mark a circular space twenty-two metres across. Conifers crowd its north half while loose stones scatter the south, suggesting people once shaped the hill before forgetting the name. The fort does not demand belief, but it does demand notice: a small ring of soil and memory waiting for someone to walk its edge and ask what it kept.
In rough pasture, on a S-facing slope overlooking the valley of the Baurearagh River. A roughly circular area (diam. 22.6m) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 5.9m; int. H 0.7m; ext. H 0.7m) SW-NE with an external fosse (Wth 1.8m; D 0.45m) SW-E and by three adjoining linear stretches of a recently erected stone wall NE-SW. The N portion of the interior is cut into the upslope to compensate for the hillslope. The interior still retains a slope down to the S. Coniferous trees grow in its N half and large stones occur in its S half. The fosse is obscured by gorse and briars. A field boundary abuts the rath at S.
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Kerry. Volume I: South-West Kerry' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
