What is recorded here
Two circular stone huts and a blocked souterrain crouch beside the ringfort Cahernagat, where the Saint's road still passes within a hundred metres. The smaller hut measures only 3.8m across, suggesting a cramped bedroom or storage nook rather than a grand hall. The souterrain opens at the bank crest like a hidden mouth, its L-shaped passage capped by slabs and blocked after one metre in each direction. Whatever lived beneath the hill has stopped speaking, but the stones still hold the shape of that secret.
Cahernagat/Cathair na gCat: Roughly circular univallate ringfort KE042-072---- is situated on the W slopes of Reenconnell below the pass between the latter and Lateevemore. Gallarus oratory (KE042-071004-) is located only about 50m to W and the Saint's road passes less than 100m to E.
Hut sites: Two circular stone huts, their walls now reduced to banks of stone collapse up to 1.3m high. The NE structure KE042-072001- is c. 5.3m in diameter internally and the SW only c. 3.8m. There is no evidence for entrances.
Souterrain: A .5m square aperture, on the present crest of the enclosing bank at NNE, provides a restricted view of what appears to be an L-shaped, drystone-built Man-made underground passage passage. The opening is in the roof of the passage immediately above the junction of the 2 sections which are aligned NE-SW and SE-NW. The walls are c. 0.5m high and are capped by at least 2 slabs. Each section of passage extends for only 1m before being blocked.
The above description is derived from J. Cuppage, ‘Corca Dhuibhne. Dingle Peninsula archaeological survey. Ballyferriter. Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne’ (1986), no. 546. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
