What is recorded here

Indicated is a levelled ringfort in County Mayo pasture, its thirty-two-metre circle hiding a man-made underground passage. The fort has surrendered much of its shape to grass and time, but the hidden passage remains a doorway into darkness beneath the ordinary field. People may have lived, hidden or worshipped inside that chamber before the mound disappeared.
In pasture. Shown as circular enclosure (diam. c. 32m), with Man-made underground passage (MA121-080002-), on OS map (1838). Low mound marks the position of site. Bank, levelled. The above description has been derived from D. Lavelle (compiler), An Archaeological Survey of Ballinrobe and District including Lough Mask and Lough Carra. Lough Mask and Lough Carra Tourist Development Association (1994), No. 170. Date of upload: 7 January 2015
