House

Medieval stone house which was the residence of the Dean of St. Mary's Church known as the deanery later replaced by the City Gaol on Merchants Quay. In the year 1295 John Dullard, chancellor of the church (LI005-017015-) of Limerick, complained about 'Roger de Lesse sheriff of Limerick, that when he (John) was going to the house of the dean of said church, on a business against Roger, Roger took him and imprisoned him in the castle (LI005-017014-) of Limerick' (Mills 1905, 2). O'Flaherty (2010, Fig 3, 53) recorded the following details; 'Deanery, Newgate Lane West N. Dean's house 1665., yard 1747 (Potter MS, 1/23, 1/127). Dean’s court 1783 (RD 351/147/235372). Deanery, site planned for City Gaol 1788 (Deanery plan)'. City Gaol, Merchants Quay, N. end, on site of former deanery. Built by 1813 (Lenihan 1866, 430), 1827 (McKern).
