Castletown Airfield served as a satellite to Wick during the Second World War, guarding Scapa Flow until the last operational aircraft departed in April 1944. Today grass chokes the concrete and a former decontamination centre holds cow manure, turning wartime urgency into rural absurdity. A naval gun once stood outside the headquarters before the Navy reclaimed it, leaving behind only dispersal bays and the memory of engines shaking the Caithness sky.
