Beaufort Castle is the twelfth building raised on one Highland cliff, a fact that turns the stones into a timeline of repeated loss and stubborn return. The first fortress faced Alexander I, the middle ones fell to Cromwell and Cumberland, and the current house appeared in 1885 for the Frasers of Lovat. Each time the site was broken, it was claimed again, as if the river bank itself refused to forget them.

Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Beaufort Castle as Enclosure (period Unassigned). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 100m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

Beaufort Castle was built by the de Burgh family in the 13th century and later held by the Earls of Kildare. It is remembered as a strategic stronghold in the Scottish Borders and for its historical associations with medieval noble families.
