Beaufort Castle occupies a violent Highland memory where twelve structures rose and fell before the current house appeared in 1885. Cromwell blew it up, Cumberland burned it after Culloden, and the Frasers of Lovat kept returning to the same dangerous ground. The old defence ditch still marks the east side, while gardening has buried the western scars.

Beaufort Castle was built by the de Vesci family in the 12th century and later held by the powerful Douglas family in the 14th century. It is remembered for its strategic importance in the Scottish Borders during the Wars of Scottish Independence.
