Embo House stands in Dornoch, Sutherland, where a medieval castle belonging to the Gordons of that Ilk gave way in 1767 to the present building. The old fortress disappeared, but its location survived inside a farmhouse still occupied and preserved. The house may have begun as a defensive seat before becoming a domestic one, carrying the same ground through changing uses.
