What is recorded here
Beaufort Castle has stood on the same Highland ground since Alexander I, surviving Cromwell's gunfire and Cumberland's fire after Culloden. The Frasers of Lovat kept rebuilding it, perhaps twelve times, until James Maitland Wardrop raised the present house in 1885. A broken wall still marks the old Dounie fortress, while the new castle watches the river beside the ditch that men dug during that first remembered siege.
Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Beaufort Castle as Enclosure (prehistoric)(possible). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 10m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
Beaufort Castle is a prehistoric enclosure, likely dating to the Iron Age, and is remembered as an example of early defensive or ritual earthworks in the Scottish landscape. Its exact historical significance remains unclear due to limited documentation.
The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
