What is recorded here

No wall from the medieval castle remains, yet workmen digging foundations for Andrew Carnegie's new home in 1899 uncovered two buried cists beneath the demolished ruins. The site has continuously attracted reconstruction since its first charter mention in 1211 AD, transforming from a thatched Bishop's residence into Carnegie's grand castle through repeated demolition and rebuilding. Each owner seemed compelled to erase what came before and impose their own vision upon the same Highland ground.

Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Skibo Castle as Bishops Palace (16th Century), Castle (medieval), Country House (19th Century). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 1m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

Skibo Castle was originally built as a medieval castle and later expanded into a country house in the 19th century; it is important as a historic estate associated with the influential Mackenzie family of Kintail.
