Ballone Castle stands two storeys high above perpendicular rocks, its main block rising to three storeys and a garret with one square and one round corner tower. Built in a Z-plan during the late 16th century, the structure featured slender stair turrets in re-entrant angles and contemporary vaulted outbuildings to the north, including a bake-house and offices against a courtyard wall. First mentioned in the early 1600s as the fortalicium of Easter Tarbat, the castle was acquired by MacKenzies in 1623 and occupied until at least 1693 before becoming ruinous by the mid-18th century. The creation of the Earldom of Cromartie in 1703 brought a name change when the first earl transferred Castlehaven to this site, though Ballone Castle became the locally accepted name by 1872.
