Cross-slab in High Island

Cross-slab

What is recorded here

Half a metre of forgotten island. A cross once stood where a man knelt, then broke and buried itself in rubble beside a small stone cell. The top and bottom are gone, one arm damaged, yet the middle still points upward through dirt and time. What the cross marked is lost, but the act of marking remains, stubborn and clean in the dark earth.
Recorded by Fisher (2014, 220, no. 48, Fig. 7.8), this incomplete undecorated cruciform cross-slab (H 0.32m; Wth 0.16m; T 0.04m) of garnet mica-schist was found in rubble to the SW of ‘Cell B’, the clochan (GA021-026013-) to the E of the church (GA021-026014-) on High Island. The slab is split down the middle and broken at the top and bottom. One damaged side-arm survives. It is possible that the cross-base (GA021-026071-) may be the lower part of this cross-slab (ibid., 222). Compiled by: Olive Alcock Date of upload: 20 November 2015
