This blue commemorative plaque records: Site of the birthplace of Nell Gwynne. Founder of Chelsea Hospital and mother of the first Duke of St Albans. Born 1650. Died 1687. The house was demolished in 1858. Recorded plaque organisation: Hereford City Council.
Nell Gwynne, a prominent Restoration actress and mistress to King Charles II, played a significant role in founding Chelsea Hospital; she is also remembered as the mother of James, Duke of St Albans.
