The Hall

Gateway serving The Hall, erected c. 1775, comprising a pair of ashlar gate piers (on square-plan) having moulded bases, moulded capstones with cornice detailing, and having a pair of wrought-iron gates with spear finials. Carved foliate decoration to the east elevation, just below capstones. Set slightly back from road adjacent to associated gate lodge (see 40847022), and located at the start of long winding approach avenue serving The Hall (see 40847025) to the south. Sections of rubble stone boundary wall to either side having soldier coping over. Located in the rural countryside to the south/south-east of Mountcharles and close to the shores of Donegal Bay.

This elegant gateway creates a suitable fine first impression at the entrance to a demesne of the quality of The Hall. Notable for its refined simplicity and classical elegance, this gateway is enhanced by the mouldings to the piers and the decorative wrought-iron gates. The carved detailing to the piers illustrates skilled design and execution, and has a classical character that compliments the architecture of the main house itself to the south. This gateway forms part of a pair of related structures along with the attendant gate lodge (see 40847022) adjacent to the north-west, and part of a wider collection of structures associated with The Hall (see 40847025).
