Settlement deserted

Settlement deserted, medieval

What is recorded here

Fertagh vanished from Kilkenny while its earthworks still bruise the soil beside the Augustinian abbey. The town gave up its streets and markets, but it never stopped occupying the land. Its ghost remains visible in aerial photographs and satellite images, proving that departure is not the same as erasure.
According to Carrigan (1905, 297), the town of Fertagh, 'is said to have been situated in the field between Steepleview House [KK008-048----] and the churchyard [KK08-047002-]. Earthworks associated with settlement were identified on aerial photographs (CUCAP 1968, AYP 2; CUCAP 1968, AVQ 104) and are visible on Digitalglobe (viewed 5 October 2018) to N, S and W of the Augustinian abbey (KK008-047001-).
