Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Graigueavoice

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

No entrance survives, only a broken circle of earth where human life and fairy tale both claim the dark. The bank stands half a metre high around a twenty-seven metre chamber, perhaps a home, perhaps a trap. Forgetting the boundary between the seen and unseen may be the point.
A circular area (diam. c. 27.4m) defined by a bank (Wth c. 2.3m, int. H 0.5m, ext. H c 0.5m) with evidence of a fosse at N and SW. A field boundary cuts the site at E and W. No obvious evidence of original entrance. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Laois' (Dublin Stationery Office, 1995) compiled by P. David Sweetman, Olive Alcock and Bernie Moran. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 17 December 2007
