What is recorded here

Enclosure is a fairy fort or earthen ringfort in Gortanabla, County Roscommon, Ireland. The site occupies the crest at the east end of a northeast-southwest rise, though the enclosure has vanished beneath reclaimed pasture. Surveyors recorded the feature as a twenty-metre circle in 1837 but widened that measurement to thirty-five metres by 1915. The changing map markings suggest the earthworks resisted easy definition even as the land itself erased them.
Marked as a small feature (diam. c. 20m) on the 1837 ed. of the OS 6-inch map and as a larger enclosure (diam. c. 35m) on the 1915 ed. Situated on the crest at the E end of a NE-SW rise, it is not visible at ground level in reclaimed pasture but it was probably a rath. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 24 August 2010
