Megalithic structure in Glenlary — Report the wrong picture

Slievereagh’s summit holds a large stone leaning on smaller stones and rock, marked Cromlech on maps but perhaps never built at all. The hilltop pasture keeps the shape visible while depriving it of human intention, turning a possible monument into a geological joke. What looks like craftsmanship may be gravity and patience, reminding that not every strange angle needs a story behind it.

In rough pasture, on the summit of Slievereagh, 200m NE of townland boundary with Moorestown. A possible megalithic structure (LI049-093002-) lies 8m to the WNW, possible robbed out cairn (LI049-095----) lies 150m to the SE. Not marked on 1840 ed. OSi map. Annotated ‘Cromlech’ on the 1897 ed. OSi 25-inch map. The monument has been described by De Valera and Ó Nualláin (1982, 79) as follows: ‘The object marked “Cromlech” on the 1901 edition of the map stands near the rock-face. The photograph given by Lynch and Fogerty (1911, facing p. 15) show it to be a big block supported at one end by a number of small stones and resting on what seems to be rock outcrop at the opposite end. It appears to be largely natural’. No surface remains visible on Digital Globe orthoimage taken between 2011-13 and on Google Earth orthoimages. See attached and Google Earth orthoimage.
