Church

What is recorded here

Site of Church is a church in Glengoole North, County Tipperary, Ireland. The church stands on a long rectangular platform in grassland on a low rise, with Derryvella bog to the west and the Slieveardagh hills to the southeast. Several stones protrude from the platform surface, possibly marking the levelled church, while the 19th-century farmhouse and farmyard ruins called The Demesne lie immediately to the east.
In grassland on a low rise of ground with good views in all directions, Derryvella bog to W and Slieveardagh hills to SE. The 19th-century ruins of farmhouse and farmyard indicated on the 1st ed. OS 6-inch map as 'The Demesne' are located immediately E of the church. The church is located on a long rectangular platform which may represent the remains of the graveyard (TS048-038001-). Several stones protruding from the surface of the rectangular platform may be the remains of the levelled church. The field to the S of the church appears to have been drained or reclaimed in the 19th century, with evidence of small drainage systems in this field, suggesting that the land surrounding the church may have been wet and marshy when the church was in use.
