Indicated is a crannog in County Mayo, Ireland, an artificial island or platform built above fresh water where people lived, kept animals or marked a boundary. The name gives no further detail, but the form is clear: wood, stone and patience shaped against a lake or marsh. Someone stood at that edge, watched the water move and made a place where none had been.
