Monument

Cairn, wayside cairn

What is recorded here

No visible stones remain on the south verge of the Tully to Salrock road, yet the missing cairn still marks the edge of a forgotten landscape. It stood beside a chapel and joined a pair of similar monuments further east, forming a quiet line of human attention across open ground. The earth may have swallowed the stones or taken them elsewhere, but the place remembers the shape they once gave it.
On S verge of road from Tully to Salrock c. 100m E of a chapel site (GA070-011----) and c. 850m E of a pair of similar monuments (GA010-043----). Indicated on 1st ed. OS 6-inch map but no visible surface trace survives. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. I - West Galway'. Compiled by Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1993). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
Portal dolmen; likely dates to the Neolithic or early Bronze Age. Its association with nearby similar monuments suggests it may be part of a ceremonial or funerary landscape.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
