Snakehips was the stage name of Ken Johnson, the tall Guyanese dancer who led Britain's finest black swing orchestra until a German bomb struck the Cafe de Paris in March 1941. His music filled London basements with joy, yet his sudden death removed the heart of that sound and scattered his musicians into the wider jazz world. Gerald Hamilton carried a framed photograph of him everywhere afterwards, still calling him my husband, proving that the dance partner can be the deepest measure of a life.
